Relative abundance and autecology of three piscivorous fishes in lakes of the upper basin of Salado River (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) Ecología austral
Barla,María J; Vera,María S; O'Brien,Emma D.
The Salado River is an important watercourse in northern Pampean region of Argentina which includes several lakes in the upper part of its basin. This upper part shows lesser fish species richness than the lower section of the river. In this paper, an analysis of community structure of secondary and tertiary consumers and its autecology are presented. Among the 14 fish species recorded, 3 were mainly or totally piscivorous as adults. They constituted 11.4% of the numeric abundance and 10.8% of the biomass. Their numeric abundance was 89% (Oligosarcus jenynsii), 11% (Rhamdia sapo), and 0.5% (Hoplias malabaricus malabaricus), and their relative biomass was 61%, 33%, and 6%, respectively. Length/weight ratio, condition factor, and cephalic index indicate that...

Chromosomal evidence of population subdivision in the freshwater fish Leporinus elongatus in the Upper Paraná River basin Genet. Mol. Biol.
Molina,Wagner Franco; Shibatta,Oscar; Galetti Jr.,Pedro Manoel.
Cytogenetic analyses performed in populations of the Neotropical freshwater fish Leporinus elongatus of the Upper Paraná River basin showed a chromosome polymorphism involving heterochromatic segments of the nucleolar organizing pair in this species. The NOR-bearing chromosome pair was characterized by two phenotypes identified by the absence (C¹) or presence (C²) of a heterochromatic segment located in an interstitial position of the long arm in this pair. The meiotic segregation of these variations results in three distinct cytotypes, C¹C¹, C¹C² and C²C². Both populations were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Sex-related cytotype divergence was identified and multivariate analyses revealed that the C²C² individuals presented morphometric differentiation...

Genetic differentiation through dispersal and isolation in two freshwater fish species from coastal basins of Northeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Abreu,João Marcelo S.; Waltz,Brandon T.; Albert,James S.; Piorski,Nivaldo M..
Abstract The coastal basins in Northeastern Brazil used in this study make up two different ecoregions for freshwater fishes (Amazonas estuary and coastal drainages, and Parnaiba) and two areas of endemism for Characiformes (Maranhão and Parnaíba), and exhibits a diversified yet poorly explored freshwater fish fauna. The population structure and biogeography of two migratory freshwater fish species that are commercially exploited from Maranhão and Parnaíba regions were herein analyzed. Molecular sequence data and statistical analyses were used to estimate haplotypes networks and lineage divergence times and correlated with hydrographic history of drainage and paleodrainages of the region. A total of 171 sequences was produced for both species, Schizodon...

Phenotypic plasticity associated to environmental hypoxia in the neotropical serrasalmid Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Fernández-Osuna,María Alejandra; Scarabotti,Pablo Augusto.
ABSTRACT Many South American characid fishes develop reversible dermal protuberances in the jaws to optimize aquatic surface respiration (ASR) during hypoxia. To date, basic aspects of this adaptation remain unknown, mainly due to the scarcity of experimental studies. In laboratory experiments, we determined time necessary for the complete formation and reversion of these structures in Piaractus mesopotamicus , and studied comparatively behavioral, morphological, and respiratory responses along gradients of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. Morphological changes during hypoxia consisted in dermal protuberances of lower lip, anterior border of maxillary and distal border of opercular valve, increasing the known number of structures modified. These...

Systematic assessment of the Leporinus desmotes species complex, with a description of two new species Neotropical Ichthyology
Burns,Michael D.; Chatfield,Marcus; Birindelli,José L. O.; Sidlauskas,Brian L..
ABSTRACT Members of the Leporinus desmotes species complex can be distinguished from other barred or banded congeners by the combination of nine distinct black bars across the head and trunk and long, pointed, laterally compressed and upward curving symphyseal dentary teeth. A taxonomic reassessment of this complex revealed two new species, one from the Orinoco and Negro rivers of Venezuela and Brazil, and the other from the Xingu and Tapajós rivers of Brazil. Both species are similar to L. desmotes and L. jatuncochi, but differ significantly in body shape morphology, coloration, and/or circumpeduncular scale counts. Genetic evidence also contributes to the recognition of both new species. This contribution also maps the geographic distribution of the four...

Zygoparity in Characidae - the first case of internal fertilization in the teleost cohort Otomorpha Neotropical Ichthyology
Fukakusa,Clayton Kunio; Mazzoni,Talita Sarah; Malabarba,Luiz Roberto.
Abstract Most teleosts are externally fertilizing, with internal fertilization occurring as a relatively rare event. Until now, Euteleosteomorpha is the only teleost cohort known to undergo internal fertilization. In the teleost cohort Otomorpha, it has been recorded the presence of sperm in the ovaries of some species of Characiformes and Siluriformes, but no fertilized eggs have been found so far in the female reproductive tract. It has been presumed that oocytes can be released into the water with associated spermatozoa and only there becomes fertilized, and the term insemination has been used to characterize the strategy adopted by these fish. Here, we present the discovery of the first case of internal fertilization in the teleost cohort Otomorpha, in...
